Here is how it works !

The Problem:

The WIRES feature included in Yaesu radios and HTs enables them to transmit (a) a preset tone when the PTT is pressed or (b) a series of preset DTMF tones during transmission.   By default the WIRES is set up to transmit a preset (1750Hz) tone.  This creates a problem with radios and repeaters which are not compatible with WIRES.  It results in silencing the first several seconds of the transmission.

The Solution:

Some Yaesu radios provide the option to turn OFF the WIRES feature.  For those that don’t, simply changing the radio configuration to send "DTMF tones" instead of the WIRES tone and leaving the DTMF memory blank, as described in the table above, can avoid the WIRES problem.  No tones, end of story!

DTMF Tones for Advanced Users:

Almost all amateur radios have the capability to send DTMF tones over-the-air. This can be utilized in several ways:

-          to activate nodes via a Echo Link or IRLP enabled repeaters

-          to send preset DTMF codes for remote repeater control or status check, for example, to get a the signal report from N6NFI repeater

-          as a "DTMF Dialer" in legacy radio phone patch systems

Hope this helps.
